A vacation on the Amalfi Coast should be on anyone’s bucket list, but choosing the best town to stay in can prove to be challenging. I should know since I’ve already visited the region two times already, and I am planning the 3rd escape.

Many people might think of the Amalfi Coast as only Positano or the charming island of Capri, but there are many more villages you can choose to stay in. Depending on your budget, the length of your stay, if you are traveling with your friends, significant other, or family, you might be looking for a different kind of accommodation.

Rest assured, by the end of this post you will be able to make a perfect choice. I have gathered in one place some of the most beautiful hotels, apartments, and villas from all the villages on the Italian riviera.

As someone who loves Italy, I can easily say the Amalfi Coast might be one of the most beautiful regions in the country.

Choose the Best Town to stay in Amalfi Coast an overview

Just look at the map to more easily understand the location of each of the towns in and around the Amalfi Coast.

Bear in mind that the closest airport to the Amalfi Coast is the one in Naples, and from there you can either take the train to Sorrento, and the bus further on the coast, rent a car, or book a private transfer.

Other things worth knowing when choosing the best town to stay in Amalfi Coast:

If you plan to travel by boat/ferry choose to stay in Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Cetara, Minori, or Salerno. They all have connections and will easily get you to Capri or other places.

Sorrento and Salerno have train stations. You have direct train options from Rome to Salerno, or from Naples to Sorrento.

SITA Bus operates buses linking Sorrento to Salerno. They have stops in all the smaller towns along the coast, and you can buy daily tickets.

Driving from one village to the other is not impossible, but finding parking spaces during the peak tourist season is both challenging and expensive.

The best time to visit is always during the shoulder season – March to June, or September to early November.

Where to stay in Amalfi Coast without a car: Sorrento or Amalfi.

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast for your honeymoon: Ravello, Positano, or Capri.

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast with your family: Maiori or Minori, Vietri sul Mare.

Where to stay in Amalfi Coast to skip the crowds: Vietri sul Mare, Praiano, Salerno.

Sorrento – the best place to stay on a budget or for a longer vacation

Sorrento is a great option for those looking for a bigger city, with great budget accommodation. It is easily reached by train, bus, or car from Naples, and you have plenty of options to get from Sorrento to Positano or any other village on the Amalfi Coast in less than 1 hour.

You will find plenty of apartment-style accommodation options, but outside of the city, you can also find beautiful villas for a larger family.

Another reason why you could choose to stay in Sorrento is the fact that you have plenty of activity options. Getting to Herculaneum, Vesuvius, but also to the islands of Capri or Ischia, is easy from Sorrento.

Beach lovers will have access to a few beaches in and around Sorrento, where they can relax and lay under the sun.

The best accommodation options in Sorrento

Monica B & B in Sorrento

Set up high on the hills above Sorrento, peaceful and quiet. With fresh breakfast and breathtaking views, they provide a shuttle to/from the main city area to the villa every couple of hours.

Mount Vesuvius will greet you every morning and you will enjoy the traditional breakfast served on the terrace. Rooms have air conditioning and the host goes above and beyond to make you feel at home.

Grand Hotel Aminta

Great all-Italian traditional food, beautiful pool with free-of-charge towels, incredible views, and a convenient free shuttle bus to the city center. This would be my choice no matter when I go for a vacation in Sorrento.

When traveling by car you will have free on-site parking, and many guests have enjoyed the delicious food served at the hotel’s restaurant.

Hotel Palazzo Guardati

Incredibly central location, with a rooftop pool and killer views. You will be only a short walk away from the port or the train station for when you are planning for a more active vacation.

That being said, I wouldn’t choose it when traveling by car because you will have to pay an extra fee per day. The perfect option for when you are traveling as a couple or with the family since they have rooms for 4 people as well.

Villa Fanella

Villa Fanella

Set between Sorrento and Positano, with a terrace with sunset views, this is a whole apartment where you will have privacy. It is true that you might need a car to stay here, but it will all be worth it because you will be 10 kilometers away from the center of Positano, and 15 minutes from Sorrento.

Pearl House

A spotless apartment for those who prefer having a whole place to themselves on vacation. I always choose apartments when traveling for a longer period because we have access to the kitchen and can save a bit by having breakfast at home.

The new apartment is modernly furnished, has a small balcony with a nice view, and is only 6 minutes away from the beach.

Picturesque 2-bedroom home with garden

This place is THE place for people who love to spend time outside. It is a very nice villa with a beautiful garden where you and your friends and family can spend plenty of time.

The place can host up to 7 people and can be rented with the apartment next door which can host up to 5 people, making it the perfect destination for when you travel in a larger group.

It boasts air conditioning and heating, thus conditions for every season.

Positano – maybe the most beautiful town on the Amalfi Coast

Vacanta in Positano Italia: 5 days in Amalfi Coast

Positano might be one of the most beautiful destinations in Italy, a place like no other that attracts thousands of people every day in peak season.

Red, pink, yellow, and blue buildings nestled on the top of the hill will welcome you to the picturesque Positano. Make the best choice of accommodation and you will wake up to one of the most stunning views you could wish for.

No matter if you are traveling for your honeymoon, traveling with your family, or want to stay on the Amalfi coast on a budget, there will be something for everyone.

Because I could talk on and on about Positano, I strongly encourage you to read the comprehensive guide for where to stay in Positano.

But if you don’t want to read a whole new guide, here are my top picks for accommodation in Positano.

Il San Pietro di Positano

Luxury hotels in Positano

Although this hotel is set a little bit outside of Positano, they do offer tons of advantages for staying here.

A stunningly beautiful 5* hotel with a vibrant and luxurious interior design, a private beach so you won’t have to worry about the crowds and a fitness center you will have access to. You will also have access to a state-of-the-art SPA and an outdoor pool.

Additionally, here you will also find a Michelin-star restaurant that is almost always fully booked, with a terrace overlooking the colorful houses and the sea.

Don’t worry about traveling to and from the center of town, because the hotel has a free shuttle bus available for their guests.

From your Junior suite, you will have a sea view directly from your bed and even from your bathtub.

Alcione Residence

where to stay in Positano

A family-run hotel with a great location and stunning views, AC in all their rooms. Make sure to book way in advance, because they have only a few rooms.

Positano Holiday House

I would stay here for the view that comes with such an affordable price tag. Also, this is a big apartment, with 2 rooms and a fully equipped kitchen but also a washing machine for when you spend a longer vacation on the Amalfi Coast.

Praiano – just outside of Positano, but on a budget

25 minutes away from Positano, offering the same breathtaking views, you’ll find the small low-key Praiano. Colorful houses perched on the hill, apartments, and hotels with endless blue views, terraces with mosaic tables and vivid flowers, close to the main road linking all the villages on the coast.

Choose to stay in Praiano if you want a relaxing holiday and don’t plan on a packed itinerary. Of course, you will have access to public transportation, and if you choose to rent a car it will be easy to travel around.

My go-to car rental company is always Discover Cars. It is a great aggregator that will help you find and book the best option for renting a car during your trip, helping you save up to 70% on your car rental. They have a pretty good cancellation policy that would give you options in case your flight or travel plans change. You will most probably need a car to get to most of these places, especially if you want to keep a schedule. Get your best offers here!

The best accommodation options in Praiano

Il Giardino Dei Limoni

As I’m writing this post I’m looking for accommodation myself and this villa with apartments has immediately caught my attention. That terrace is stunning, and I could imagine myself working or simply enjoying strong Italian coffee with that view.

Just a 1-minute walk from the beach, and close to a bus stop, you cannot get a better location than this.

Guests enjoyed staying in this less popular village because they had the chance to skip the crowds.

Malú Apartments – Infinity sea view

A big apartment with 3 bedrooms, is the perfect choice when you are traveling with your family or a larger group of friends. The interior staircase with colorful mosaic is picture-perfect, while the terrace is where you will spend most of your time.

The window next to the bathtub is another point of interest, from where you can enjoy the immense blue while relaxing.

The apartment has air conditioning and the hotel has a restaurant where you can enjoy delicious local dishes.

Grand Hotel Tritone

An impressive hotel to consider for your honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast, or for any other special occasion.

With its own private beach, 2 pools with stellar vires, a wine cellar, and an outstanding staff, you simply cannot go wrong when choosing to stay here.

Some of the rooms have large terraces with sunbeds, while others have jacuzzies by the window.

Stay by the beach in Maiori or Vietri sul Mare

Amalfi Coast on a budget

The beaches in Vietri sul Mare or Maiori are the best you could find on the Amalfi Coast. Vietri sul Mare (or the small villages above it) is a less popular destination for tourists outside of Italy, thus you won’t find the crowds of Positano or Amalfi.

Maiori is another destination popular with Italians, but it is also where you will find some delicious restaurants and the perfect place to go with kids.

On my second trip to the region, I chose to stay in Vietri and I loved it. Even though getting to Positano could prove to be a bit challenging during the peak season (avoid August if you can), the price we paid for the room was just right for the view we got.

Una Volta

accommodation on the amalfi coast

Rooms with a bathtub by the window with an authentic design, provide also delicious breakfast. The hotel is set 2.5 kilometers away from one of the nicest beaches on the Amalfi Coast, the Marina di Vietri Beach.

You will also have free parking at the hotel, for when you choose to rent a car and travel around without having to worry about finding a parking space or paying for it at the hotel.

Stay in Capri for an unforgettable escape and island vibes

Capri Island_Marina Grande

Capri Island is not only one of the most picturesque destinations in the Italian Riviera, but it has also been the favorite destination for the rich and famous throughout history.

One cannot visit Capri without falling in love with the landscape, luxurious restaurants, and hotels, and the vibe this island has. There’s no wonder why celebrities choose to spend their vacations in Capri and even have their favorite restaurants.

When you choose to stay more than just one day in Capri, by far the best area you will want to stay in is Anacapri

From here it will be easy to get to all of the important attractions on the island, and you will be close to the main restaurants and bars. Moreover, shopping lovers will love it here, because they will also be within walking distance of some of the coolest and most authentic shops – no matter if you are looking for souvenirs to bring back home or something just for you.

Read my Capri itinerary and things to do and see on the island here!

The best accommodation in Capri

Hotel San Michele

Offers one of the most breathtaking views from its terrace, but also from some of the rooms. Here you will have access to a great pool and delicious breakfast. On top of that, they offer transfers from the port to the hotel.

Villa Ceselle

Located in a traditional Italian villa, with a stunning garden and a jacuzzi on the terrace. You will be 10 minutes away from the main shopping area, but also close to the cable car.

Guests enjoyed the privacy and spaciousness of the rooms, but also the swimming pool and the fact that the villa is located close to the bus stop.

Whitewashed Mediterranean Villa

A luxury accommodation option close to the Blue Grotto, where you will feel like royalty or a superstar.

The villa has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and is perfect for up to 6 guests. Set in the middle of a Mediterranean garden, you will have the privacy you long for during your vacation.

Rooms have sea views, and the interior design is simple yet luxurious.

On top of all that, you can use your points to book it if you are part of the Marriott Bonvoy program.

Naples – the best town to stay in Amalfi Coast if you want to see a lot

10 days Italy itinerary

Two cities in one, Naples is a mix of luxury and breathtaking natural beauty, with darker areas. Strolling on the narrow streets, watching the chipped walls, one might be transported to one of the most beautiful books set in Italy, “My Brilliant Friend“.

Choosing the best place to stay in Naples could be challenging when visiting for the first time, but with the right information, you will come to love the city.

Staying in Naples will allow you to easily visit places like Herculaneum or Pompei, Procida Island, Capri Island, and the Amalfi Coast.

While during our trip we stayed close to the train station and the city center, I would recommend staying in that area only if you are traveling on a budget.

Choose to stay in Spaccanapoli, the Historical Center, or Lungomare Caracciolo. There are all better areas in town, from where you can easily get to the train station, but also to most of the important attractions in town.

The best accommodation options in Naples

BW Signature Collection Hotel Paradiso

I saw this hotel at someone on Facebook and I fell in love with it immediately. The views are simply breathtaking, and the interior design of the hotel is luxurious and all-Italian.

From the poolside, the lobby, and the balcony in your room – mount Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples will greet you throughout the day.

Guests staying here loved the service at the hotel, but also the delicious breakfast, and believe that the hotel’s name does it justice.

Daily Napoli – Lungomare

I saved this hotel in my favorites for when I get to stay again in Naples because it is perfectly located by the sea and only a 6-minute walk from Castel dell’Ovo.

They have mostly rooms for 2 people, but they also have one type of room for 4 adults, making it a good choice when you travel with friends or family as well.

The interior design is colorful and cozy, and they also provide luggage storage space, air conditioning, a dishwasher, and a coffee machine in each room.

Beautiful modern apartment

Even though the apartment is set close to the train station which is not the best of the areas to stay in Naples, what it offers made me consider adding it to this list.

The main advantage of staying close to the train station is that you will find it easy to get around town and outside of town.

Also, the interior design of this 3-bedroom apartment caught my eye: modern, luxurious, yet very Italian.

Guests will feel at home and will have all the necessary appliances for a longer stay.

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast for the first time: Amalfi

3 days on the Amalfi Coast itinerary

By staying in Amalfi you will have access to the beach, you will be in the middle of the coast, and have the option to take the boat or the bus.

That means that you will find it easy to visit most of the towns on the Amalfi Coast, and also relax.

The city of Amalfi is carved inside the mountain and is packed with small shops, cafes, and restaurants. It is a pleasure to walk around the narrow street and shop for souvenirs.

The best place to stay in Amalfi

La Bambagina

“Your window on Amalfi life” as they call themselves, is the right place to be when you want to stay in the heart of the city. Close to the beach, the Amalfi Cathedral, and the main square in town, the hotel offers nice rooms and a delicious continental breakfast.

NH Collection Grand Hotel Convento di Amalfi

Set in a perfect location, with outstanding views and 5* services, this could be a perfect choice for your honeymoon on the Amalfi Coast.

The property has a large garden, the rooms have terraces with sweeping views, and the infinity pool carved in the mountain is the cherry on the cake.

Of course, it all comes with a price tag, but it will be surely worth it.

Hotel Villa Felice Relais

Choose to spend time on the terrace or walk the 3-minute distance to the beach when staying at this hotel.

Enjoy your breakfast on the terrace and book the half-board option for when you don’t want to worry about where to have lunch or dinner.

All rooms come equipped with air conditioning, and a balcony or sea view.

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast for honeymoon: Ravello

Ravello Amalfi Coast

A bit remote, set on the hilltop, Ravello has always drawn celebrities and royalty alike. While you won’t have access to the sea, most hotels have private pools with stunning views.

However, that doesn’t mean that you won’t find also affordable accommodation options in Ravello.

Hotel Villa Cimbrone

You might never get the chance to stay in a castle, moreover in a castle on the Amalfi Coast, so take the chance for your honeymoon and book that stunning room at Villa Cimbrone.

One of the most famous hotels in the whole Mediterranean, this place dates back to the 12th century and was for many years the go-to for celebrities, intellectuals, and aristocracy.

At this villa hotel, you will have access to a private outdoor pool, panoramic gardens from where you will get to see the most famous coastal landscape, and even a private helicopter pad.

You can choose to stay in the honeymoon suite with a frescoes ceiling and sea view or the superior suite with a terrace and sea view.

Casa Dolce Casa

A hotel with a beautiful brand-new design, a large terrace, and stunning sea views. By taking the stairway right next to it you will easily get to Ravello’s main square in a matter of minutes.

Choose to stay here when traveling by car, because the hotel offers free parking, so you will have one less thing to worry about.

Where to stay on the Amalfi Coast for the local vibe: Salerno

Salerno might not be your first option when looking for the best place to stay on the Amalfi Coast, but you might want to consider it.

Directly linked by fast train to Rome where you can get to in less than 2 hours, by the sea, with bus and boats linking it to the rest of the towns on the Amalfi Coast, and much more.

Prices for accommodation in Salerno are more affordable than in other villages along the coastline, even then Sorrento.

Also, the fact that Salerno is a city will offer you plenty of things to do and will place you close to restaurants, supermarkets, and more.

The best place to stay in Salerno

Roof Garden

The most charming feature of this Bed & Breakfast is its rooftop terrace which will offer a charming view over the city.

All rooms are modernly furnished and have a small patio.

Armonia B&B

best place to stay in Salerno

9 minutes away from the beach, with a shared lounge and rooms with a terrace.
